Capturing Christmas: Top Tips for Great Holiday Pics

Young Girl Places a Red Ornament on the Christmas TreeChristmas pictures are forever. Whether they’re goofy, earnest, or just plain sweet, pictures from Christmas parties and Christmas mornings are what memories are made of. Be sure to follow our three simple photography tips for creating fun, contemporary Christmas pictures.

Bring Plenty of Backup

If there’s one essential rule of capturing great Christmas pictures, it’s ALWAYS BRING EXTRA EVERYTHING! Whether you’re celebrating at the office or your home, be sure to have plenty of memory cards, batteries, chargers, and whatever other equipment you need to get plenty of shots. You don’t want to miss out on special moments because you run out of batteries.

Create a DIY Photo Booth

Photo booths are great, but they’re also a bit too expensive for the average home Christmas party. Luckily, with some well-draped cloth, your camera mounted on a tripod, a good portable light source, and a few fun props (think strands of tinsel and Santa hats), you can recreate the look of a photo booth. Set the camera on a short timer and let the guests have fun taking retro selfies.

Get Cozy with Your Subject

Too many people take Christmas photos where the subject — whether it’s your niece opening a gift, your mom decorating cookies, or the family ornaments on the tree — is off in the background, surrounded by lots of space. Take a step or two closer or simply zoom in and get up close and personal with your subject. Allow it to fill the frame.
