A quick online search will yield you plenty of blog posts and articles offering tips and tricks for taking good product pictures for your online store or business. While do-it-yourself product photography is a good option for some businesses, if you don’t have the right equipment and know-how, you’re going to end up with less-than-stellar product pics gracing the pages of your online store. And, unfortunately, a poorly lit, grainy, or badly composed product picture can turn off potential customers and negatively impact your bottom line. Today, Dallas product photographer Doug Davis shares a few reasons why you should consider consulting a professional when putting together your product pages.
Product Pages are the Heart of Your Business
Brick and mortar stores have the advantage of physical products that customers can see, touch, hold, and, in some cases, smell and taste. Online stores don’t have that sensory potential available to them. Because online stores function in an almost exclusively visual environment, enticing customers depends on appealing to the visual senses. A beautifully composed and shot picture of a jersey dress, for instance, will highlight the soft texture of the material, the way the fabric drapes, and the vividness of the coloring. A richly wrought product photograph invites the customer to imagine themselves in that dress, the first step toward clicking the Buy button. A poorly lit, grainy picture of the same dress is far less likely to inspire a purchase.
Good Pictures Inspires Sharing
You don’t have to have a degree in marketing to know that social media is where a great deal of B2C interactions between small product companies and their customers take place. Heck, just scroll down your own Facebook page and you’ll see plenty of ads from start-ups, established big companies, and even friends with home businesses. What they all have in common (most likely) is engaging, quality product photography. And this is no accident. Sharability is the name of the game in social media marketing, and your potential customers are far more likely to share you product pic if it looks good, than a blurry, dark picture.
