In our last post, we talked about how contemporary family portraiture can reflect the rapidly changing face of the American family. However, the challenge faced by every type of family – no matter how traditional or progressive – is finding the right portrait photographer for your needs. Your family portrait will follow you through the years and the quality, skill, and flexibility of the photographer often makes the difference between an average portrait and one that you truly enjoy and want to share. Today, Dallas photographer Doug Davis shares a few tips to find the best photographer for your next family portrait.
Opt for a Photographer Who’s in Your Budget
First, before you start actively searching for photographers or perusing websites, determine a budget for your family portrait and commit to sticking with that budget. Having a budget in hand will allow you to find the best match for your family’s needs. In addition, this will help you avoid feeling that you’ve overpaid (which, in turn, will diminish your enjoyment of the family portrait).
Find Someone with the Experience You Want
A lot of us assume that photographers all have the same skill set and that, logically, a person who does mostly landscapes will probably take pretty good portraits. While this might be the case in some instances, you shouldn’t assume it’s always the case. When you begin your search online or in the yellow pages, be sure to specify that you’re looking for a portrait or family portrait photographer.
Ask to See a Portfolio
You may not know the lingo, but you probably know good composition, lighting, and exposure when you see it, so always ask to see a portfolio before you settle on any given photographer. Most professionals have portfolios or galleries right on their website, so you can get a good feel for the type of work a particular photographer specializes in.
