“Drone” is quite the buzz word at the moment. There has been much hubbub about the use of drones becoming more commonplace for personal and business use, including the use of drones for online shopping deliveries and monitoring traffic. But there’s an even better use of drones that is near and dear to our hearts: drone photography. What is drone photography? The use of drones allows a photographer to get angles and perspectives that weren’t possible before. Imagine capturing a landscape from a bird’s eye view. Drones open up possibilities for photography.
Drone 101
A drone is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, commonly abbreviated to UAV. Drone use has long been commonplace in the military, but it is more recently that drones have become popular commercially for personal use. Think of a drone as an aircraft without the pilot. Some drones navigate on their own with the use of artificial intelligence, while others are operated remotely.
What is Drone Photography?
Drone photography is photography executed with the use of remotely navigated drones. These drones either have built-in cameras or have cameras mounted to them. Drone photography allows photographers to capture images from new heights.
The Benefits of Drone Photography
New guidelines that allow the use of drones have opened up new opportunities for photography. A photographer is no longer limited when they have a camera-equipped drone — the sky’s the limit (pardon the pun!). Drone photography captures stunning images from heights that previously required an airplane, lots of preparation and expense, or precarious risk.
Drone photography can be utilized for the following:
- Real estate photos: Capture your property’s expansive grounds or give buyers a new perspective that shows off the size of your home or building.
- Lifestyle photography: Want to capture your home or favorite landscape from a new perspective? Drone photos could be your next great mantlepiece.
- Photojournalism: Drones can help photojournalists document major events from a fresh angle that displays a more accurate portrayal of the happening’s size and scope. It could also keep photographers out of harm’s way.
- Environmental photography: Drones can reach places that would be difficult for humans to explore, such as tough terrain or wilderness.
- Videography: Drones are also capable of capturing video. Drone video could be utilized for personal use, the news, businesses, or film.
