Creative Landscape Photography

D2There is a lot you need to know to be a creative photographer. Some things can be learned, some skills or creativity you may naturally possess, and still others can be developed. That’s why experience goes a long way. When creating a creative landscape photograph you may need knowledge of the horizon, of depth, and of axes. Knowledge of all three can help develop a picture that taps into your emotions. It may be exciting, dramatic, daunting, or serene. In certain cases, you may not want to drag your eyes away. That’s how effective creative landscape photography can be.

Let’s Talk About Depth

The goal of most landscape photographs is to capture the visual feel of space or size. In order to do this, the picture needs depth. Depth is created based on how much focus is put on the foreground vs. the background.  The greater the distance between them the more depth it gives the picture.  Depth can produce a very dramatic visual.

What Are Axes?

Most all of us are familiar with the existence of the X and Y axes. On a two-dimensional image, the X axis runs horizontally from left to right. The Y axis runs vertically from top to bottom, and then there is the Z axis. The Z axis is what creates depth and produces unique pictures. The Z axis does not run across or up and down, but rather runs through (from the front of the photo to the back of the photo) giving a unique and creative perspective. Where the vertical axis falls within a photo can make the difference between a boring and a dramatic picture, too. Placing it 1/3 off either side of the frame can produce significant atmosphere.

Professional Photographer

There are several things you need to know when planning a creative photograph. You can spend time learning them all on the internet, buying equipment, etc. or you can simply hire a professional photographer. Chances are you won’t be disappointed.
