A new, up and coming style, lifestyle photography may best be defined as a combination of photojournalism and studio portraiture. Photojournalism encompasses the types of photos you see in the news. They are not staged in any way. They are candid shots. For studio portraiture, on the other hand, the photographer sets the stage, prepares the subject, background, and controls the lighting. Bring it to Life
The aim of lifestyle photography is to bring the product to life, or to capture a moment in the life of the subjects. When talking about a couple or a family, the purpose of lifestyle photography is to capture candid moments with an artistic flair. To do this you get to know your subjects in their natural environment. The photographs may be arranged, but they are not staged because they are things that the subjects would do anyway. The aspects that are planned include:
- The location
- The mood
- Lighting
- Styling details
However, the natural reactions, the energy, the interactions between the subjects, the subject and product, or the subjects and the environment, are candid and spontaneous.
Why?
While portrait photography captures the person or product, lifestyle photography captures the interactive moments within a situation, within everyday moments, or during a milestone or a real-life event, albeit in an artistic way. The photographs capture a moment in the lifetime to tell a story of the person’s life. They capture a “real” moment rather than staging a fictitious happening. They capture the real energy, the real emotion. And when clients look at the photographs over and over again, they bring forth emotional recall, making that moment real all over again.
