In short, the director of photography is responsible for the visual style of a film or photo. The position developed gradually from that of a typicalcameraman for traditional photography (photos), to cinematographer when moving pictures were developed. Eventually the cinematographer became responsible for composition and lighting and left the shooting to other cameramen. Today, if a cameraman is working solo, he is also the cinematographer and the director of photography.
What Does a Director of Photography Do?
The director of photography uses his/her artistic and creative talents, out-of-the-box thinking, special skills and experience to:
- Select composition
- Conceive the lighting
- Set the exposure
- Designate filters
- Choose the lenses
- Envisions the background
- Incorporate color, hue, and angle
- And so much more
Basically, the director does everything from start to finish to develop a striking photograph or cutting-edge video.
Let’s Talk About Some Specifics
Framing: The director decides upon the best position of the objects, people, and background within the frame to create an artistic shot.
Angle: The director decides upon the best angles for the photo or video that will relay depth and/or feeling.
Light: The director choose the right lighting, shadows, etc. Lighting plays a huge role in developing the mood and emotion of a photo or video.
