Tips For Capturing Your Lifestyle

lifeLifestyle photography is a type of photography that captures people in real-life situations, whether it be working, performing, attending an event, or celebrating a milestone. It is an artistic way to capture the everyday, the not so “everyday,” and the really special moments in life.  There are as many different lifestyles as there are people, and lifestyle photography is a way to capture your individual lifestyle. Of course, unless you are a professional photographer yourself, you will probably want to hire one, but either way, here are some tips for capturing your lifestyle.

Incorporate the Natural

Lifestyle photography are staged photos that aren’t staged, so to speak. For instance, the importance is in capturing candid moments and genuine expressions rather than fake poses/smiles. To do this the subjects need to be engrossed in what they are doing, caught up in the moment, unaware that the photographer is even present.

Location

Your client should always choose the location or locations that are special to them. It may be the bedroom during family snuggle time, a favorite picnic area, a book store, coffee shop, diner, or museum, but it has to hold meaning for your subjects.

It’s All in the Details

Capturing that loving look a young child gives their parent when snuggling, reading a book together, or just because; or how a child’s hand fits into an adult’s hand; or that look of concentration or awe on a child’s or adult’s face; or that impulsive touch when a toddler reaches out and touches their parent’s cheek; these are all special candid moments that are so individualistic that once lost, forever lost. These are the details that portray real life and emotion. Capture them.

The Imperfect is What’s Perfect

Lifestyle photography is about real-life moments, and real-life is seldom perfect. That’s why the imperfect is perfect when capturing people’s lifestyles. The cowlick in the hair, a toddler’s snarly hair, a runny nose, the revolting glance at the cooked carrots, they are “real,” and lifestyle photography is all about capturing reality.
