What is a Drone?
First of all, what is a drone? Drones are all over the news so there is no doubt that you’ve probably heard of them. Until recently, they have been used primarily in aviation and the military. A drone is basically an unmanned robot. The most popular are aerial drones of which there are two types: the RPA (remote piloted aircraft), and the UAV (unmanned/unpiloted aerial vehicle). Drones were developed and used to avoid putting the lives of soldiers and pilots at risk in stealth maneuvers or combat zones, and they are also advantageous because they don’t require sleep, and there are no mechanical difficulties, meaning they can continue to fly as long as they are fueled up. Recently, drones have become available on the commercial market, and are being used to capture unique aerial photographs, and more.
Drones for Weddings
Some of the drawbacks associated with drones include the noise they make. They produce a buzzing noise like that of a swarm of bees. Other issues include the possibility of crashing into things, then there is the concern that they may interfere with airspace.
However, when used for weddings the primary problem is the noise which has been known to be solved in a variety of ways including:
- Using the drone only while music is playing
- Using the drone during the cocktail hour
- Positioning the drone behind the ceremony and using a zoom lens
- Positioning the drone high enough above the couple and/or crowd that it goes unheard and unnoticed
Considering the amazing and unique footage/images the use of drones produces they have already become extremely popular as the next best thing for wedding photography.
