City skylines make popular postcards, backgrounds for your pc, and photographs for your home, especially if the city has great memories and is close to your heart like Dallas is for many of us. Each city, whether it be New York, Paris, London, or Dallas, has its own unique layout, architecture, and personality. Capturing a skyline can be quite tricky, however. So, today we share some tricks and tips to help you capture the nature of your favorite city skyline.
Tricks and Tips
Searching for a vantage point: It is not possible to photograph a city skyline from within the city itself. You will need to leave the city to find a good vantage point. You may have to climb a hill, mountain, take the photograph from an island, or even from a boat. It could take some imagination, ingenuity, and stamina, but the results will be worth it.
Angle: Wide angles are usually best when trying to capture an expansive cityscape. Try a focal length between 12mm and 35mm. By using a wide angle, you will not need to travel so far outside of the city to take a great photo.
Field depth: You can decide which parts of your photograph, from front to back, are in focus. That distance is considered your depth of field. You choose the depth by using a specific aperture size. For skylines, a narrow aperture, or high f-stop provides a deeper depth of field which means that every detail of the photograph will be in focus.
Where to focus: When deciding where to focus becomes difficult, try this tip: zoom in on the corner of a building using the LCD screen (in LiveView mode), and focus the picture manually. This will help provide a clean, crisp shot.
