Why Is Color So Important In Photography?

When it comes to photography color has its place and so does black and white. When it comes to life, some people love color and some prefer muted colors. However, no matter which way you look at it, attention to color is important when taking pictures, because color can make the picture pop, and it emotes feeling.

Why is Color Important?

The major reason color is important when it comes to photography is because it can make a photograph feel exciting, lively, mysterious or perhaps scary, melancholy or somber. If you have a cellphone where you can change or add color to your pictures, such as by making them black and white, amber, etc., you can see for yourself the mood different colors invoke.  Color can help us tell visual stories, but it is mostly used to evoke feelings on an emotional level.

Emotions

People emote even when they are trying not to because human beings are emotional beings. Emotions are what make us human. They are vital to humanity. When looking at photographs, it is not usually how the photo has been composed that interests people, it’s the way it makes them feel.

Color plays a huge part in that. Colors have more significance than what meets the eye. Blues and greens can be calming, while reds and brighter colors can evoke excitement. Interior decorators use color based on the mood they want certain areas of the house or office to communicate: relaxation, fun, formality, casualness, etc. That’s why learning how to use color is important for photographers, professional and otherwise.
