The Essentials of Drone Photography

Drone Equipped with Camera Flying Above Residential AreaLast week, D-Squared Studio proudly announced our newest arrival: our very own drone. We’re guessing you’ve heard of drones, especially in the context of modern warfare and pizza delivery, but you’re probably wondering why in the world a perfectly normal photographer like Doug might need one. Today, we’re answering a few essential questions to help provide an overview of this cutting edge photographic technique.

What is a Drone?

Also known as a UAV (or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), a drone is an aircraft that does not have a human pilot physically onboard the craft. Some drones are remotely piloted (meaning the craft is entirely piloted via remote control by a human pilot) while some are autonomous (meaning human navigation is supplemented by artificial intelligence and robotics).

Drones were first officially used by the U.S. Military in the 1970s during the Vietnam Conflict. Drones have become popular among civilians over the last decade and the FAA has recently updated its guidelines for commercial and recreational use of drone aircraft.

How Does Drone Photography Work?

Drones with built-in cameras are available commercially, and come with lots of features ready to go. Alternately, you can buy a drone and mount a camera (plus vibration isolators, a gimbal, a visual transmitter, and some other add-ons) yourself. Then it’s simply a matter of practicing flying the drone without crashing it.

Ok, That’s Cool and Everything, But Why Get a Drone?

Dude, have you even read this post? It’s a flying robot with a camera! That’s reason enough, right?! No? Ok, it also expands our Dallas photography studio’s menu of services and it enhances some of our existing services. Give us a call to discuss how aerial photography or videography can help you!
